Presidents Report – 9 February 2024

Welcome to the February 2024 Presidents Report.  Now that Christmas and New Year are over and kids have returned to school, it’s time to get down to business once again.

Our Term 1 activities are off to a good start and membership is growing quickly.  So far this year we have welcomed around 25 new members and renewals are coming in from the 2023 membership list.   As you may be aware, it was necessary to raise our fees for memberships and activities for the first time in over 12 years. Membership is now $50 per year and term activities $80 paid up front, or $10 if paying on a casual basis.  Non-members pay double.

Our first meeting for the year was held on 6 January 2024 and a short precis of this is outlined below:

  • Secretary’s ill health – unfortunately Jo Briggs our newly appointed has some health issues and has had to step down from her role for a time.  Thankfully Valerie Irwin has again agreed to take on the role in the interim.

  • David Trow has returned as a committee member from 6 January and we welcome David back with his special skills.

  • Councillor Jason O’Pray, Division 8, who is standing as a mayoral candidate in the next Council election has met with committee representatives to ascertain how he can assist Coolum HeARTs.  This occurred on 9 January.

  • Big announcement – the Community Christmas Lunch returns this year to the Coolum Civic Centre!

  • The Shed – Council has attended to the trimming of overhead branches and gutter guard has been installed.  The next step is the placement of a concrete slab and ramp at the back of the shed and installation of a small storage shed.

  • Coolum HeARTs has assisted Coolum Lions with the organisation and running of the Tickle Park Markets held over 9 weeks of Christmas and the New Year’s Eve celebrations.  Thank you to all volunteers – we couldn’t do this without you.

  • Raffles are ongoing at the Coolum Beach Hotel on a Thursday night and are proving successful.

  • An Easter Stall is planned for Saturday 30 March 8-11.30am at the front of The Shop, David Low Way.  Donations of Easter-themed goodies are most welcome.

This year we sadly farewelled our long term drumming and choir facilitator Michael Barry who is taking on new endeavours.  We will miss you Michael and wish you well.  Two new facilitators have taken over the reins – Levi Vander Aa (Drumming) and Mark Seaman (Choir).

We have recently made a connection with the newly formed art collective The Niche  who will participate in the 2024 Art Trail in May.

Our committee is always looking forward to find ways to raise the profile of Coolum HeARTs and improve the provision of our services.  Our recent Business Planning Meeting on 3 February addressed the issues of committee changes and composition, role clarification for committee members, attraction of more volunteers, future events and the possibility of sponsorship by local businesses.

To close, we once again thank all the amazing people who help make Coolum Hearts Inc a great place to be.  Our wonderful facilitators, our coordinators/volunteers who are on board to support our facilitators and participants, our members who come along and are a part of the Coolum Hearts family and the amazing carers we see who attend to help make each life activity for each participant something special.

All the best,

Lindsay Boreham
